Wildlife Watching

Insh Marshes is one of the most important wetlands in Europe. With ospreys, lapwings, goldeneye ducks, hen harriers, spotted flycatchers, tree pipits, redstarts and great spotted woodpeckers all frequently spotted in spring or summer.  The winter sees mallards, teals, whooper swans and geese arrive.

Some 500 species of plants have been identified on the RSPB reserve. There is a sign posted RSPB reserve car park situated off the B970, half a mile beyond Ruthven Barracks.  From here there is access to hides; an information viewpoint and a trail, all permanently open.

There are guided walks and special events organised by the RSPB including dawn and dusk chorus and night noises events, family days and walks.

Loch Garten is the main home of the osprey in Scotland. The Osprey Centre, set in the native Caledonian pinewood of Abernethy Forest, overlooks the nest of these fish-eating birds of prey.  With expert staff on hand and utilizing CCTV and various viewing aides you have the chance to observe these famous Scottish birds.
